Introduction

Hello everyone! For the last few years since I have gotten into mag fed paintball I have been obsessed with magazine modification. Specifically a best fit solution for double magazine systems tailored for variable intensity gameplay.

Most existing solution sets for allow you to semi-permanent bind two magazines together. Permanent in the sense that during your active game time you are not likely to detach your empty/dead magazine. Therefor the interpretation could be made that only over half the active engagement time you will have the security of a quick mag change. Once you commit to the mag change you have dead weight in the system and no additional quick change.

I wanted a better solution. It’s my personal opinion that twenty rounds is a heart pounding gritty underdog challenge and trust me I love that. But forty rounds frees up my mind to better process the strategic field movement and awareness paintball is known for. It provides the security of capacity that I can bunker someone(s) and adequately respond to the various unknowns the newly resulting field position has landed me in. I don’t want a box mag and I don’t want a beta mag. I just want to know that if I have been firing and I am down to half a mag I can always top that up to a full mag and a half before I dive into that house or gut run for a new position. I know 13ci limits me to six mags total so the per shot value for me hasn’t changed significantly.

Despite the simplicity of what I present to you now this has been an interesting design build that I intend to chronicle in the following posts for those interested in the extended read. But without further ado I present to you the Magnetic Mag Binder R2.0 How To

Step1: Gets the Gluingz On…

With the mag pullers that I got with my ParaPro; I just lined them up such that the rubber ribs are tangential to the 20mm magnets. That puts the bottom two outside perhaps 1/8 of inch but I like that. It gives us a nice strong foot print to resist rogue moments.

I made the mistake of gluing the wrong sides of the magnets together last night so they opposed each other (opps). If you have the patience I recommend doing a single one as your test mag and letting it cure so that you can test each magnet prior to gluing so you don’t repeat the mistake I made.

Note that with the 1 minute set time you can do multiple binders at once but I noticed they like to drift as most pullers are not level/flat. So you’re going to want to baby sit them for the first 10 minutes and then revisit after an hour. The stuff I had says it is “Functional in 1 hour” but our surfaces are mostly insulated from the air so expect longer curing times. Also the magnets are going to stick better if you rough up the surface some with sandpaper/grinder/file and remember to clean surfaces of oil or debris for strongest hold.

Step2: Attach Modified Puller to Magazine…

I like to Urkel up them pullers about an 1/8 inch on the mag there for optimum stress transmission. But you do as you like.

I am told by those that have heard from those that know; that you don’t want to keep taking on and off pullers as they can lose their holding power. Thus if you are like me and are upgrading to square mags from the older round ones that doing all your upgrades at one time might be in order… ie clean, lube, spool covers, square conversion ect

Features

-The ability to replace the dead mag in the system.

-The ability to step down to a single mag.

-The ability to bind a first strike mag to a standard paint mag.

-Does provide a left hand and right hand copy; however you just need to flip&clip instead of standard slip&clip.

-Provides the necessary offset to clear the magwell up at the top

-Has plenty of hold at the bottom but breaks clean when you apply leverage from top. The triangle magnet layout provides adequate torque resistance.

-Made of simple easy to source components. See bellow table of contents in the original post for component list.

-Shouldn't interfere with most magazine puller pouches.

Brief History

I wanted to design a modification that would enable you to detach the dead mag and reattach a live one. I designed such a system almost two years ago. I geared up and started sourcing and purchasing components and material stock. I figured it could be like a hobby business that didn't make any real money but filled a niche for people like me. That was enough for me but I kept getting the sinking feeling that I was over thinking the design and there was a simplified way of doing it. Life got in the way as I am glad it did and I came back fresh to the project. It’s almost frustrating that the solution I have now is so painfully simple. I can’t believe no one has done this yet.

The one thing the current design lacks is an alignment tit to latch on. But I still haven’t schemed away to make that work such that it doesn't complicate the left hand right hand dynamic as it exist. Also I have really fought myself to design the system such that it makes no permanent changes to the existing magazine. Also I wanted to make this something you just buy off the shelf without much “Real” modification. I suspect there might me a R3.0 version for advanced users that we can work out as a community.
