www.reconinstruments.com/products/snow-heads-up-displayCool idea and could maybe be used for paintball (great if your whole team has them and new enough smartphones since then you can see their positions while playing.) Kinda wishing that someone would make one for paintball goggles and then a kind that don't need smartphones.

YES YES YES, exactly what I want, been playing around with wrist mounted smartphone, but I haven't had the time (yes, yes, priorities, I know) to find/write a decent app and get it working yet.

I'd put wireless cheap, short range transmitters on all my buds. The heads up display would show their locations relative to my position (my own transmitter would indicate center). Pinging and measuring the response time would indict relative position in yards or meters. Taping their transmitter once would indicate they were engaged and need assistance! Tapping it twice would turn them red and indicate that they were out. also alerts you to the fact that you'd be flanked.
I guess I could come out of retirement to design something like that. It would be cool. Could probably also sell to LTL (less than lethal) or mil. Not cheap but with limited range functions and simple microprocessor I could do it. My problem will be finding the actual HUD that would with stand a paintball hit and not endanger the viewer/user!
Just realized that I could mount an infrared sensor in the top of the mask on the outside and it would give you range (for the straight ahead object.) And if fields wanted a special transmitter indicating friend and foe bases. What else would a baller want. Other than two way voice communications. Would someone spend $200-$300 for that (normal good masks are close to or just over $100)! Walkie talkies are $50; so for $50 to $100 more would you buy one? Oh and additional transmitter at $40-$50 each...eventual we could hook transmitters to trip wires, motion sensors, etc.
Would raise the level of play again and give woodsball another dimension to speed ball. Kinda like, would anyone pay 8 to 10 times more for a first strike round!

I've been thinking more....yes, I know that's dangerous. Would it have to be heads up? What about something like an old droid or ipad. Something we could get cheap in quantities of like 1000 units. Reprogram them.
They could do everything I talked about, except range finding. But, a bluetooth attachment could handle that. We could get models out quick and test the market. And, possibly patent it before RAP4 tried to steal it! Just an app on a phone that could link in with other phones who also had the app. First to market!
And, at the same time, we would not have to worry about safety issues and the goggles you have would work just as well. So now a device that costs around $200 that you look down at to determine where you are at relative to others! Hell, you could stream video with the phone cameras so your mates could see and probably use a wireless ear piece for two way conversations!
