I was playing the Water Wars game a month or so ago and I think that's when I realized the world of "snipers" were about to change. Dealing with a bum knee I didn't do much running around that weekend, most of the time I stuck close to the CP only venturing out to eliminate those few players that got too close for comfort. Around the middle of the day we were getting hit pretty hard and from multiple directions.
The layout of the field left a large "deadzone" that neither team could advance through without getting shot up. It worked out better for them then it did us however as they were quickly flanking to the left and right. In front of me, about 50 to 60 yards were two players hiding behind a shipping container. These guys were standing there watching the chaos unfold and even though others had taken shots at them the best they could do was bounce balls. These players weren't worried in the slightest. I was using first strikes and I'd shot enough that week that I was started to get confident in their use. I aimed down my sights and lifted the gun up to where I could just see the top of one of the players heads. There wasn't much wind but I waited for it to stop just to give myself that extra edge.
I steadied myself and squeezed the trigger. I could see the round in flight and I quickly moved my scope back so I could see the player. I thought I had missed, but a second later I could see a glorious explosion on white on the top of his left shoulder. The player put his hands in the air and the guy with him opened fire... on the bushes about twenty feet away from him.
The other guy, who clearly saw me in the distance, sooner believed that the shot came from somewhere else then it did from me. He was so convinced of this that he went into a panic trying to find the shooter.
A lot went through my mind after that. I thought about replicating that shot closer to their CP, in a ghillie suit and with a higher priority target, like the general for example. I made a few more eliminations before we were overrun but none gave me the same satisfaction as that one.
It was, to say the least, an awakening.
