OK, I have been wanting to do this for quite some time now ever since I did it to my other A5, and it turned out pretty cool. This time around I'll be showing you all how to build/cut in a rail into the side of your A5.
WARNING: This is a "cut in mod". Meaning that this is a gun frame mod that will require you to permanently change the design and look of your marker.
Materials needed:
A measuring device that measures in MM.
Scotch tape.
A 5mm round chainsaw file( I think that most are 5mm). 2 files are recommended as they are some what brittle and will wear quickly, but 1 is fine.
A hack saw with a fine tooth blade. preferable one that is used to cut metal.
2 metal files, one regular flat one and (optional) triangle file.
NOTE: The internals should be removed to prevent shavings from entering the marker.
To start this project, you will first need to do some prep measuring and marking work. You will need to get the exact dimensions of a 7/8" picatinny rail .http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picatinny_rail Here is a link to a very helpful page( click first picture for dimensions).
First you will want to get a level mark to work with. Take a strait edge( a ruler will do nicely) and draw a line on the face of the barrel port. Next you will need to draw a line 90 degrees and center of your level line. This is now the center of your marker and your reference line.( this is VERY hard to explain, so check out the pictures below for better understanding) Now you will want to mark the greatest distance of the rail onto your marker. The proper measurement is .835( +or- .005", it doesn't have to be exact..but close). Be extra careful to mark these two lines(one on each side of your center reference line), because if you are off, it will show when you put your light on. Once your rial lines are draws, mark another line 90 degrees of those two lines, and half way between them( again, reference the pictures). This line is your center line/center groove for your rail( this is what your center screw will set in).
Now that your marking is done, its time to start filing. But first, a safety tip. Put tape over your marker body to prevent you from scratching your marker when filing. Start first on your two side marks for the actual rail itself. File down as flat as possible, and be careful to keep is square with your marker. You will want to file almost to till you touch the body, your trying to go as deep as possible. And don't worry, you cant go deep enough to put a hole into your marker. Next take your triangle file and put a back cut into your rail( the part you just filed). This will prevent your light from being pulled off. If you do not have a triangle file, you can use a hack saw and just cut a groove into the side. All your trying to do is make it to where your mount cannot slide off.
Now to start on your center groove. I like to start the groove with a hack saw first, then use the round file( it just offers stability so you don't wounder much). You will need to go kinda deep with this one, but I recommend you only go until your groove touches your side rail marks. You can always come back adn fine tune your groove later if your mount dose not fit properly.
After you get that done, put on your mount and start to fine tune your rail. It may need some center groove filing to allow your mount to set down all the way. And at first it may be a little wobbly, this is ok. file lightly and constantly until you think its as stable as it can be. It may still be a tad loose, but thats understandable since its on a round surface. Simply torquing down your mount will eliminate any movement.
And thats about it. This may prove to be a pain to paint, but patients always prevails.
