California Bill SB 798 threatens to destroy our beloved sport of paintball. The bill would require all replica firearms, including paintball markers, to be painted a bright neon color. While this is specifically a California bill right now make no mistake, it will come to you to! The greater paintball community needs to crush this under it's heel. The fact is that we play a safe and harmless sport and this bill will do nothing less than reduce that sport to a distant memory. The paintball community as a whole should not be forced to suffer do to the irrational fears of bleeding heart congressmen. Here is the bill in full: www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/11-12/bill/sen/sb_0751-0800/sb_798_bill_20110413_amended_sen_v97.pdf

Monday, the California Assembly's Public Safety Committee amended SB 798 to make an exception to the Bill for any spot marker with a caliber larger than 10mm (.43 caliber). It appears to me that the impact of that amendment would be to remove paintball from being a part of this legislation. Of course, the essence of the legislation is still aimed at airsoft.
If you read the original two pieces of legislative analysis you would have seen that no one ever considered paintball to be part of this bill. It was just the way the Bill was written that dragged paintball into the picture. There has been no new legislative analysis of the Bill since the amendment, and I would like to see what the legislature's purpose was when they amended the Bill before I breath a complete sigh of relief. The hearing on the Bill that was supposed to happen yesterday was pulled by the Bill's author so now we wait for another week.
