I have been thinking for a while about how to get a good picture of my long range shots with my fs. I knew i had to have optic zoom for me to get a good picture quality at those ranges (tried with a borrowed gopro once but it dind't work well) so i looked around for a cheap light camcorder with optic zoom. Unfortunately all the cheap ones i could find where too heavy/big or had no optic zoom and i would also have to make some kind of casing to protect the camera. Then jjron99 made his Scope cam and I started playing around with that idea a little while. The problem was that while his scope cam is awesome i prefer to use my scope as usual (just feels better for me) so i have had parts of an idea floating around in my head for a while about how to make it work for me and i think i might have an alternative to the scope cam that isn't too heavy, it is probably more expensive though. Anyway i thought i could use one of these www.r7usa.com/r7replayxd.phpwith a monocular with preferred zoom attached to the front www.hustlepaintball.com/NCStar-8X21-Monocular-Ruby-Coated-Black-N821Rprobably less zoom (if i can find it cheap) but i think you get my idea. this setup will then be attached to the scope with something like this thing www.opticstore.com/STx3942G-D.jpgso that it doesn't matter if the scope is mounted on the marker, an apr or an optimizer What do you guys think. could it work?

As I understand it archorn, you'w tried the screen type solution (camera/iphone) and did not feel comfortable with it? I havent tried that, but I think it seems like a good idea, anyways its all down to personal preference. As for your solution, I can't see why it would not work, my only considerations would be the paintball proofnes (is that even a word) of the monocular and getting the proper "eye relief" between the monocular and cam. While on that subject, if there is a gap between the monocular and the cam, there might be a issue with white balance because of the light coming in. If that would be the case some tape or similar around the gap should fix it. Looking forward to reviews

Man, it sounds great Fixxer. I don't want to pioneer anything else. Spent way too much already (for the year); but, go for it. And, then I copy what you come up with.

Allu yes I tried a little with an digital camera to see how that worked for me but as mentioned I found that I personally prefer to look through the scope rather than looking at a screen. Then there is the complications that arise when the battery dies.
The monocular will be a cheap kind for around 10$ so I'm not to concerned with how it holds up against paintball hits (though the one i linked should be ok as long as it isn't hit in the lens) and for the eye relief part i am thinking of something a little similar to how jjron99 attached his camera housing to his scope (this should hopefully eliminate light coming in also) will hopefully be able to build this later in the spring if i can manage to squeeze it into my budget. Also thought about making some kind of sunshade for the monocle so that it is less likely to reflect sunlight and also so that there is less of a chance that a paintball will hit the lens

Sounds like you got it figured then, the sunshade is also partial paintball cover for the lens. Good luck and keep us posted

I agree that adding a scope cam in front of a scope makes the marker more bulky and unwieldy. One of my other options I was exploring is this: Bushnell Videoscope 5x Scope Mounted Video Recorder www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&prodID=BH737000VThe advantage is that its mounted on top of your scope allowing you to use your scope as normal and it's already 5x power which is more than enough to see FS shots at 50 to 100 yards clearly. At the time I was looking for a scope cam, it was around $250 but looking at the site, its currently on sale.

A couple things to keep in mind with the bushnell you just linked, it only has 1 gig internal memory which is about 30 minutes and then it has to be downloaded to a computer. It is also only VGA quality so it might not be as easy to see the FS's as you think. You might check out Replay cameras. They don't have zoom but they are tiny and use microsd cards up to 32 gig I believe.

Yeah, I saw those limitations too. I've never kept the camera on all the time, for my style of play 30 minutes is plenty and I have a netbook I upload everytime i'm back at the staging area. I admit that VGA is low resolution format but can be cleaned up using a good editing software especially since the camera already has a 5x zoom. But I agree it is not the best way to film as is. I've never seen it or used the item. Just throwing out ideas...

I'm skeptical against everything without zoom for catching what your shooting at. I'v noticed with my contour that tho the quality is descent and it gives great overview, its kind of hard seeing whats happening further downrange.

I have contour also that is mounted on my goggle. I really like it. If only the front lense is replaceable with a zoom option lense.

Alternative: Using two scopes Good: camera LCD just below your targetting scope Bad: more heavy

Some of you may have seen this, JJRon inspired me to create this for the SR-1. I call it the iSniper. I am putting the finishing touches on a DIY up armour mod. Maybe I can talk Trinity into posting it up This was a video I made, I still hadn't sighted in the mount as you can see in the zoomed video. I just wanted to see if the concept was sound.

So did you design the app or the mount or both? Is it only for the iphone or is there an android version?

It's a MeoPix adapter with (I suppose) pvc inserts?
My issue with using an Iphone directly to aim is that the sun often makes it difficult to see what is on the screen...

What app are you using for it?

The app is Theodolite by Hunter Research. Yes the sun can be an issue but I covered that with the up armor, it will be in my DIY. The app cost 3.99, zooms, photos, records with water marks etc. the only thing it needs is a usable in recording range finder.
