I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread about all different camouflage options available.
First off is the Ghillie, now we all know that these comes in different styles. we have the Full suit, the Poncho style and the full suit with partial ghillie.
Now the advantages with Ghillie is that it conceals you really well making you extremely hard to find. It also makes most hits bounce from you .
The biggest disadvantages is that it they're really warm which makes them hard to have on for long periods. Also a Ghillie will hinder you movements, as well as actually making you easier to spot while you move (bigger target is easier to spot...). Last big disadvantage with a ghillie is, that due to the fact that most hits will simply bounce off you many fields won't allow you to use one. So if you plan on making or getting a ghillie make sure the field you play at allow the use of ghillies
.
An Example on how a ghillie can look. (for more just check the How to make your ghillie thread)
Now for those that like to move around a bit more there's a few alternatives that will be better then a ghillie. First of is the 3-d suit
A 3-d suit is a very lightweight camouflage that alters the contour and silouette of you, which makes you blend in to your background. It is built on a mesh netting body, on which pieces of extremly lightweight cloth has been sewn on so that only one side is attached to the body (see picture). The cloth is a bit stiff, making it stand out from the body, thus changing your silloutte. Unlike the Ghillie a 3-d suit won't get stuck in any branches or anything.
Advantages: It makes you extremly lightweight and offers you amazing breathability. Hides you better then a normal camo suit due to the fact that it alters your shape and silouette (like a ghillie). Good moveability
Disadvantages: Since it's so thin it won't offer you any protection against paintballs (hits may hurt more). Can be hard to find the right color combination for your area. If you play really active you might risk tears in the mesh after a year or so (i've had mine for over a year and no problems yet).
This is the exact 3-d suit i use, i'll add some pictures of me using it in full paintball gear when i have time.
Next one is a optical 3-d suit
Optical 3-d suits isn't actually 3-d but tricks the eye that it is. Many hunting suits work this way. The pattern of the suit blends into the background making it hard for the eye to decern the shape of whoever's wearing it.
Advantages: easy to find in the right colors of your area (just check out hunting stores). Huge selection on different styles (how thick they are, if they have a hood or not etc. etc.) Works better at concealing you then a normal camo suit. Good moveability
Disadvantages: Doesn't hide you as well as a Ghillie or real 3-d suit. If the color scheme or pattern is wrong for your area it won't work at all.
A picture showing how the suit tricks the eye.
Next one we're going to talk about is the web-tex style suits. These are basicly vests or suits made out of web/netting that has loops where you can add stuff from the enviorment. Now i have never used a professionally made web suit (If someone has please fill in anything i might miss), but i have made home made ones from mosquito jackets.
Advantage: you can change your camouflage to match perfectly where ever you hide. It's lightweight and breaths well. Really really easy and cheap to make your own ( made mine for under 10 euros (umm 13ish USD))
Disadvantage: Takes a bit of time and practice to get the camouflage good (helps alot if you have a teammate that can do it for you). Does tend to get stuck like the ghillie if you crawl around. Can be difficult changing the camouflage when you get to a new spot.
And last but not least we have the normal camouflage.
These comes in every pattern, shape and color scheme imaginable. I won't add any pictures since i hope you all know how they look.
Advantages: they're cheap, with a close to unlimited options on color, style or pattern
Disadvantage: While a normal camo suit will hide you better then no camo at all, it does pale in comparison to all the mention above.
Now i personally have used every kind of camouflage mentioned in this post. The ones i like best is the 3-d suit and the optical 3-d due to the fact that they keep me cool while playing and they offer both excellent moveability and good concealment. A Ghillie does work great if you plan on limited movement. Make sure you have a good thermal lense and plenty of water along though ( you wouldn't want to get fogging now would you?)
Feel free to add anything i might have missed. Next time i'll be talking about camouflaging your marker and other gear.
